A tile in a strategy game is an area of space, usually deemed to be on land, where units, resources, and settlements may be located.

In early computer games such as Railroad Tycoon, Civilization, and Colonization, squares were used, just as in chess, checkers, and Snakes & Ladders. That was fine for the bird's eye view that was the usual form of display. But with the advent of angled views such as isometric, squares no longer looked like squares and the term "tile" arose. With the growing use of hexagonal spaces, commonly known as "hexes", as in Imperialism and Imperialism 2, the term "square" is well and truly on the way out. ("Be there or be square?")
