England at difficulty 400[]

Robin's first try[]

1502

Capital on river at coast; handy bonus in the swamp.

Standard $5,000 with very little in the warehouse and merely a Peasant Levies regiment in the barracks.

Listing rivals clockwise: Spain is shipping 6 grain, 4 meat, 1 wool; Por 3 grain, 2 meat, 1 timber; Fra 6 grain, 6 meat; Swe 12 grain (!!), 5 meat, 1 timber; Hol 9 grain, 4 meat.

Rivals have the standard three techs that we can target and six that we can research now. Target Organized Regiments and accept the computer's suggestions for research: Land Enclosure (9 years by $100), Superior Hull Design (19 years by $0), Diplomatic Expertise (19 years by $0).

Make paper (for the one extra needed for a second explorer), and cast iron (to match the amount of lumber). Bid for wool, timber, iron ore; offer tin and horses. Send one carrack off to the most westerly sea available (Utrecht). Consulates in Germany and Ireland (mostly as a precursor to eventual pact and hoped-for annexation because they adjoin), and Scotland for its wool.

Start road south-easterly towards nearest group of grain farms. Develop grain just beyond road. Explore nearest high country.

1502-04

Buy (one each) wool from Sco, timber from Swi, Ger, Den, Ire, iron from Sco. Nobody else was bidding for them. Hol, Ire, and Por also offered horses; Den also offers tin; no bids for either. Credit limit $10, 19%.

Order Explorer, make lumber and C.I. to keep ahead of roading and development as long as possible.

Offer 5% subsidies to "our" NSs. Our relationship to each rose a little - but no more for Sco (with two trades) than for the others (with one). All three show that we have overcome about half of the original diplomatic disadvantage.

(Only highlights from here on; original pen or pencil notes are copious.)

1504-06

Carrack heads for what looks like the most westerly point of sea available. Hindsight suggested that a closer look at sea shapes might have got us to more land sooner.

Make 2 fabric.

Ratings Fair/Poor. Por Fair/Good. Other 4 Good/Good.

1506-08

Nobody offered us wool or iron.

Find iron, close to likely road. Carrack heads for the only NW coast it has seen.

Order 2 peasants.

1508-10

No sales, no offers.

Done 4th grain, so food almost OK; no material for more development. Find copper, south-east of iron.

Labor 6.

1510-12

Road reaches 4th grain; start developing 5th. One explorer goes to NW to search for the inland capital indicated by a harbour at north-east corner of NW.

Rating Good/Poor. Por Poor/Good. Others Good/Good.

1512-14

Find 2nd iron.

Rating Good/Poor: Spa Exc/Good, Por Fair/Good, others Good/Good.

1550-52

Labor 8

Probably no more of this report...
